Based on comprehensive assessments, China's peak power load this summer is projected to reach about 1.6 billion kilowatts, up around 90 million kilowatts from last year, equivalent to adding the power load of one Henan Province, noted Li Chao, Deputy Director-General of the Policy Research Office of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC).

Li added that investment is expected to exceed RMB5 trillion for planning and constructing a number of power transmission channels and inter-provincial power supply projects during the 15th Five-Year Plan (FYP) period. Ultra-high voltage and extra-high voltage AC networks will be optimized by tiers and regions, while a series of urban distribution network upgrade projects, power grid renovation projects in weak areas, and projects addressing frequent outages in rural grids will be implemented.
